The CBHMA'S May edition of the Greasy Grass just arrived at the doorsteps and I have to say it's one of the best in years. A wide assortment of articles contained within:
1. Crazy Horse And the Fetterman Fight by John Monnet. The author says that scant evidence exists that says CH was even present at the battle.
2. Red Cloud and his connection to the LBH battle. by Robert Larson.
3. Historic Gateway To Custer Battlefield. A photographic history to the park's old entrance. By Sandy Barnard and James Brust.
4. Ribbons, Pins and Badges by Doug Scott. A look at reunion souvenirs, badges and collectibles. Good stuff.
5. Recalling the Little Bighorn: Stories told by 7th Cavalry Survivors by Ken Hammer. How can you go wrong with anything Dr. Hammer writes?
Great edition by Sandy B. and company. Available to non-members as well. Grab a copy.

I agree. Nice photo included of Daniel Newell. You don't see pictures of most of the enlisted grunts very often.

I remember seeing a photo of Newell and his wife in Hardin one summer. They were shown standing in front of the Sturgis firetruck. There was also a photo of Edward Garlic and his wife taken at what looked like a picnic. Fascinating.

I saw a book about the history of Sturgis in Al's Oasis in Chamberlain, South Dakota, on the trip back to Pierre from Sioux Falls. There was a photo of Newell's wife, Mary, and some other notable ladies standing on a sidewalk. Daniel Newell was not in the photo. Edward Garlick was not present at LBH and later married the widow of G Company trumpeter Henry Dose. Both Garlick and Newell are buried in Bear Butte Cemetery in Sturgis.

Excellent stuff Scott. Here's a list of the ones I've done on FIND-A-GRAVE. Bypass the family members...everyone else is a 7th Cav. trooper and even a couple of 'sole survivors' I was researching thrown in. I still have others I want to do when I get time.

I'm still searching for a photo of Edward/Edwin Pickard. One was printed in one of the early 1900's Portland newspapers so I know one exists. Contacted the park and was told it might be in the National Park storage warehouse in Tucson, Arizona. Suppose its the same one in the Indiana Jones movie. Probably next to the Ark and just as hard to get.
