Hi Henri:
I provided some historical information for the owner but also commented to him that the scabbard, based on beadwork design, is much later than 1877 -- it looks turn of the century to even 1920s to me. I doubted his provenience, but that of course did not make it into his description!

Hi Ephriam,
When you add a famous name to an object it will sell better I guess.

How many ya got?
I'll trade half (6) of my plastic spoons, labeled (in ball point) '7th Cav. 1876' for six plates

One plate has food stains, supposedly from Custer's buffalo steak smothered w/onions meal.
You need to up the plastic spoon count!

crzhrs- "...You need to up the plastic spoon count!..."
You drive a hard bargain, Pard.
Okay. I'll throw in the spoon inscribed, "To my pal, Crazy. Best wishes in the future." signed, S. Bull
Best I can do.
M
P.S. Always wanted to know. Any evidence on the plate that Custer used ketchup or hot sauce? Conventional wisdom says he only used A-1 Steak Sauce, but it's never mentioned 'til after the RCOI so I'm suspicious.

Not to ruin the comedy routine, but I noticed the same auction house is selling Gordon Lightfoot's Parade Saddle. Isn't he the dude who sang "If You Could Read My Mind"?
Why is every Gordon from Canada or the UK?

Diane - "...Not to ruin the comedy routine,..."
WHAT? I thought there was some serious horse tradin' going on here. Perhaps I should I withdraw my offer? Preservation of my reputation would preclude my having any involvment with what might be perceived as a sham or some trivial and silly postings.
"...Why is every Gordon from Canada or the UK?..."
Maybe it has to do with the Gin?

Diane:
I asked my uncle Gordon about your observation. He said that only Canada and the UK would allow them in, or permit the name to be perpetuated, and that is why he went there when he was invited to leave the U.S. He claimed to have tried Austria and Belize, and been refused entry.
He says he is currently negotiating with Mexico, because they apparently let anyone in, and aren't too careful about who comes and goes, particularly the "goes" part.

The knife plus the case went for $20,000 an anonymous bidder got it and donated to the Crazy Horse memorial. Further info on the case is that my friend told me it was a womans case, beadwork was from around 1900. So you see what a name can do. Henri

Thank you for the update, Henri. I am disappointed the Crazy Horse Memorial accepted such a gift. I would hope they would be more careful with their representations of Crazy Horse's belongings.

The Crazy Horse Memorial is an odd mix of commercialism and history. One of my NDN friends swears the statue looks like Karl Malden.
