How about Moyland who hid behind boxes, or Varnum or cried once he got on Reno Hill, or the enlisted men who were so scared they didn't fire the weapons?

THEY WERE FIGHTING FOR THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. ALL OF THEM. But still, ya know, even Utley maintains that LBH was an Indian victory first and foremost. I'm not searching why did the Indians win. But why did the US army lose. The greatest respect you can have for them is to seek why it happens. The thread about Reno 4pm - 5.30 pm is still opens. If you want to defend Reno and Benteen from the accusation of betrayal you have to deal with the question in this thread. Why did they wait 1.30 on Reno Hill. Answer to this question in the other thread. Again, soldiers don't receive respect, they earn it.

If you don't, you confirm the betrayal. And Varnum did cry for one reason : shame of having seen the battalion fleeing that way and abandonning 30 men behind. See Taylor comment about seeing his officers (Moylan, Reno) "having more concern for their personal safety than for anything else."

Thank you Miss Merkel for joining the board only to make comments on CSS and I. And about your signature... I wil be pleased if you took more time to join the LBH discussion than to find signatures to make jokes about me. That wasn't a joke.

I had written "insult" before but I didn't want to get in a battle with you. If you often posted about LBH, I would certainly have concern about your point of view... But until now...

Actually, the Army & Navy Journal uses the euphemism, "took their own life" which is somewhat more gentle than the word "suicide". But to get to the point, the Army & Navy Journal certainly did publish details about an officer's death, if the cause was known. In my bag I have the details of Lt. G. W. Smith's death. He was killed in the action for which Sgt. Brent Woods won the Medal of Honor. Lt. Smith was wounded in the first volley of the ambush and killed in the second volley. When the soldiers later found his body, his nose had been partially cut off and his mustache totally cut off (El Crab had better not run into any irate Apaches!!)
Best of wishes,
Billy

Actually, you are not adding something to the debate, you're insulting and you're disrespectful. Very nice behavior, I suppose it's the privilege of a moderator to insult the members.

Best of wishes, Billy Wow it's quite hard to put "took his own life" in a newspapers about a soldier or, worse, an officer. I have read, however, that Weir's true cause of death were never known and that the doctor was unaware of the precise cause of the death.

But quite true insofar as the Army & Navy Journal is concerned. Somewhere in a stack of papers, I have the report of an officer in California post-CW who locked himself in his office and, as the paper reported (pardon the paraphrase), took his own life with a pistol.

Billy Why had Weir to move to NY ? And why was he the only officer to have to do so ?

On a personal note:
West & CSS, while you have the distinct right to have your opinions about the battle and reasons for GAC's death, it does not give you the right to insult Diane! We, as a group, are extremely fortunate to have someone knowledgeable and TOLERANT of all our idiosyncrasies.
While I respect your knowledge, that alone will not atone for your discourtesy.

You are not treated differently because of you are children . . . it's because you ACT childish when someone disagrees with you or present different testimony that contradicts you.
We have a right to insult or praise any member of the LBH or Indians we want . . . we don't have the right to insult each other. I have been guilty of it and I will stop it now.
