Something I ran across while searching online for Custer material was a small book called "The Courtmartial of Capt. Thomas French" by John Carroll. The description of the book said that French was court-martialed & kept from testifying at the Reno court of inquiry. This is the first I had heard of this incident. Can anyone comment on French's part in the battle & why he was brought up on charges (if he actually was)? Thanks...Geiger

I haven't read that book, but will get it asap. That should be an interesting read. Walt, anyone else care to take a shot at this one?

This is from memory, so check it out. If I recall French was court-martiled for drunkeness and actions unbecoming. But this took place long after the Reno hearing.

French, who was highly critical of Reno's action at the LBH did not testify at the Reno COI. Could it be that his "charges" were trumped up so he could not be a witness at the inquiry?
PS: I believe French once said that he thought it wouldn't have been hard for a "stray" bullet to take out Reno at the LBH.
