Diane,
Who the hell vets this stuff? Here is what I have:
Listings on the Indian Memorial at LBH (alpha order without titles/ranks):
Sioux
Bad Light Hair—KIA.
Bear With Horns—aka, Bear Horn; KIA.
War Leader Chief Black Moon—KIA; a pretty exalted title for a guy who was just another war leader of the Sioux Fox Society.
Black Wasichu—DOW, 27Jun76
Chased by Owls—KIA.
Cloud Man—KIA.
Deed—KIA.
Dog With Horns [listed twice]—KIA.
Dog's Backbone—KIA.
Eagle Hat—KIA, 26Jun76
Elk Bear—KIA.
Chief Elk Standing High—aka, Elk Stands Alone; probably killed by the Ree scout Little Brave.
Elks Stands On Top—same fellow as above; this is a dupe.
Flying Charge—aka, Young Black Moon. KIA.
Guts—aka, Rectum and Open Belly; KIA.
Hawk Man—KIA.
Chief High Eagle—KIA.
High Eagle [different man?]—yes. This fellow was only 11 at the time of the battle and died in 1953.
High Horse—KIA.
Kills Him—KIA.
Long Dog—KIA. Also seen listed as Lone Dog, making it a very confusing entry.
Long Road—KIA.
Plenty Lice—KIA.
Red Face—KIA.
Swift Bear—KIA.
Three Bears—DOW, 27 or 28 Jun76. Oddly enough—and making it very confusing with the man below—this guy was sometimes known as Two Bear. Weird!
Two Bear—KIA.
White Buffalo Bull—KIA.
White Bull—KIA.
White Eagle—KIA.
Young Bear—KIA.
War Leader Young Black Moon—see Flying Charge above; this is a dupe.
Young Skunk—KIA.
Cheyenne
Black Bear—KIA.
Black Cloud—KIA.
Black Coyote—KIA.
Black Fox—I have no listing of a Cheyenne by this name; it is possible that he was confused with the Sioux of the same name who was killed at the battle.
Closed Hand—KIA.
Cut Belly—DOW, probably on the 27th.
Flying By—KIA. Oddly enough, there was a Minneconjou of the same name killed the same day.
Full Beard—aka, Bearded Man; KIA.
Hair Lip—KIA.
Hump Nose—this is in all likelihood a dupe; Roman Nose, below, was also known as Hump Nose. There was a Southern Cheyenne named Roman Nose also at the battle, but there is no indication he was killed.
Lame White Man—KIA.
Left Hand—KIA.
Limber Bones—KIA.
Little Whirlwind—KIA.
Noisy Walking—KIA.
Old Man—KIA.
Owns Red Horse—KIA. A Sioux by the same name was also killed.
Roman Nose—KIA.
Swift Cloud—KIA. A Sioux by the same name was also killed.
Young Bear—KIA. A Sioux by the same name was also killed.
Arapaho—these guys were all at the fight and were the only Arapaho at the LBH; none were killed.
Left Hand
Waterman
Well Knowing One
Yellow Eagle
Yellow Fly
U.S. Arikara Scouts
Bear—the only Ree who used the name “Bear” with no other additive, was Foolish Bear and he was not at the battle. He was used to carry messages and was reported to have left Terry’s camp on the 22nd with a message for MAJ Moore at the PRD. Other sources claim he never left the PRD.
Bear Comes Out—No Rees went by this name, though there was a Hunkpapa at the battle who used it.
Bear Running In Timber—this was a Dakota better known as Caroo.
Black Calf—the only Ree with a second name of Black Calf was Boy Chief, meaning this is a duplicate entry.
Black Fox—at the battle
Bloody Knife—KIA
Sergeant Bobtailed Bull—KIA
Boy Chief—see Black Calf, above. Same person.
Bull—at the battle, but he never crossed the river. A straggler.
Bull in Water—
Bull in the Water [same man?]—yes; same person. At the battle, but he never crossed the LBH. Helped to guard the ponies and was with the main body when Varnum was at the Crow’s Nest.
Bush—also known as Red Wolf or Brush. At the battle, though he never crossed the LBH.
Curly Head—a confusing entry. Sometimes confused with the Crow. One source has him at the LBH, but this is incorrect. He was used to carry messages and was probably one of four Rees who left Terry on the 22nd, arriving at the PRD on the 24th.
Foolish Bear—see “Bear,” above. Regardless of how this man is called, he was not at the LBH.
Forked Horn—possibly Young Hawk’s father, though there is some confusion about that. Fought in the valley with Reno and was at the Crow’s Nest with Varnum. Trapped on the east bank of the LBH after Reno’s retreat and finally made it to safety around 5 PM.
Good Face—also known as Pretty Face. At the battle and probably the only scout assigned to the packs.
Goose—at the battle; WIA.
Little Brave—KIA
Little Sioux—at the battle, crossed the river and stole Sioux ponies.
Lying Down—not at the battle; he was sick at PRD.
One Feather—at the battle; crossed the river and stole ponies. He was also on the Reno recon.
Red Star—at the battle. This is the guy—a late – teenager, who brought Varnum’s note from the Crow’s Nest to Custer.
Soldier—at the battle; a corporal and 2nd in command of Rees. Goose’s uncle.
Stab—at the battle
Strikes the Lodge—at the battle
Strikes Two—at the battle. Have you heard the story about the Ree who struck the lone tepee with his riding crop? This is the guy.
White Cloud—one of the four Dakota scouts; not a Ree, though he was married to a Ree woman.
White Eagle—at the battle, though a straggler.
William Baker—he doesn’t belong here; he was not at the battle. One of the great dissemblers. He claimed to be in the valley fight and on the hilltop, but both Varnum and Gerard said he was left at PRD. Walter Camp carried him at the fight, but Camp was wrong. Gray wasn’t sure.
Young Hawk—at the battle
U.S. Crow Scouts—all of these guys were at the fight.
Curly
Goes Ahead
Hairy Moccasin
Corporal Half Yellow Face
White Man Runs Him
White Swan (wounded)
At the risk of tooting my own horn or sounding too presumptuous, if you buy the book I have assembled, all of this and a hell of a lot more is contained in it.
Best wishes,
Fred.
