Spotted this on ebay. I've no doubt the saber is genuine, as will be the copies of the Muster Roll extracts included in the sale. Whether the named stamping on the saber linking the two is genuine is impossible to know. If it is a genuine period inscription to Lemuel Whittington, Co. C, 2nd US Cavalry, then this ID'd saber was carried through the very interesting early post-bellum period of cavalry operations against the Indians which reached their apogee at LBH, making it a very desireable colllectors piece. In my experience, however, I have never seen an enlisted man's saber stamped with more than the company and/or regt. ID - and most commonly neither. cgi.ebay.co.uk/1840-Cavalry-Saber-Identified-2nd-US-Cavalry_W0QQitemZ130130001119QQihZ003QQcategoryZ7271QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItemciao, GAC

I had an original sabre just like this one-in as good as condition too. About 8 years ago, I was out of work needing some cash-I sold it to a collector for 450.00 dollars.
