"A Ford too Far". I have this for a possible book title. It would also be a good name for the movie version. The movie would have some kind of catchy tune repeating throughout, I'd opt for Garryowen. In my movie, Custer/Roy Urquhart would be played by Sean Connery.
The setting begins with the Sioux campaign of 1876/Operation Market Garden. It would have Genl Sheridan/Field Marshall Montgomery coming up with a grand plan to end the war.
It would start with a misunderstanding of the enemy strenght due to poor surveilance when the view of the village from the Crow's Nest was obscured by the bluffs, etc./aerial photos didn't show the German panzers camoflaged in the forests at Arnhem.
Custer/Roy gets the prize and will take his battalion/British 1st Airborne up to take and hold the upper ford/Arnhem bridge.
Reno/Gavin will take his battalion/82d Airborne to take and hold the lower ford/Nijmegen bridge.
Benteen/Horrocks will take his battalion/30th Corps and he will be the cavalry coming to the rescue from the Crow's Nest/Eindhoven. His job will be to move up with the supplies and link up with Reno and then link up with Custer.
Benteen/Horrocks will be slow and late in his movements. Reno/Gavin will meet stiff resistance at the lower ford/Nijmegen bridge. Benteen/Horrocks and Reno/Gavin will finally link up but are way behind schedule. They are able to get within a few miles of the upper ford/Arnhem bridge but Indian/German resistance is too stiff for them to break through to the rescue.
In the meantime, Custer/Roy has run into a large village with more fighting Indians than he anticipated/a German SS panzer division. They do not have enough ammo. The fight ends up with Custer/Roy being overwhelmed with hundreds/thousands of troops killed.
Towards the end, Benteen/Horrocks and Reno/Gavin have a meeting to decide whether they should push north to the rescue and decide not to. Then Benteen/Horrocks quips that "I thought he was trying to go a ford/bridge too far.
The next book/movie name I have is: Khe Sahn, a firebase too far.
The one following that is: Baghdad, a wadi too far.
Does history repeat itself?
