Well ...
It's September 14, 2007 ... and the Cubbies are still in it! Not only are they in the big hunt, they lead the Comedy Central Division!
Add that to the playoff-bound BoSox and those pesky D-Backs--it looks like a heck of a finish!
Enjoy! Trish

Trish The Bosox were thrashed again last night by the Yankees, who have now closed to within 4 1/2. If you are very quiet, you can hear the footsteps of the dreaded 'Bambino' getting ever nearer.

That game was mighty long, wasn't it? The Cubs' match with the Deadbirds began over an hour after the start at Friendly Fenway, ended an hour earlier ... late nights in the AL East.
Go, Bo Sox!

Those dratted Yankees beat the Sox 2 out of 3, but the BoSox still have a 4-1/2 game lead with just 12 to play. Can they hold on? Y-E-S!!!!!!!
Of course those Patriots stuck it to San Diego after the bru-ha-ha over "spy gate" . . . I guess the Pats showed they can win regardless . . . and against one of the top 3 teams in the league.
Pats go 14-2 and win the Super Bowl!

And the Cubs scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to beat the Redlegs, remaining one ahead of the Brew Crew! Mark DeRosa goes five-for-five for the second time this year!
Could "next year" be really here? --t.

I am sorry that the Jays cannot help the Cubbies' Drive to Victory; but they did manage to make the American League East a little tighter over the past week, with a three-game sweep of the Bosox, followed by a split of four with the dreaded Yankees [who seem to be very short of pitching - not totally bereft, but hurting]. Head to head, it looks now as if the Sox should be able to handle the Yanks.
I don't follow the National like I used to when I rooted for the Reds of Kluszewski, Bell, Post, Nuxhall, Purkey, Robinson, Nolan, Maloney, the mid-seventies. I learned to hit by playing screenball in the schoolyard and pretending to be the Reds, batting left or right as the lineup demanded [now here's Smoky Burgess].
Screenball was a two or three a team game, sometimes head to head, where the window screen was the strike zone [so no arguments] - it ran from just over my head to about six inches off the ground and was about four and a half feet wide. We played with either a tennis ball, or one of these red-white-and-blue rubber balls that was only slightly larger than a regulation baseball. The pitcher's "mound" was about regulation distance, and you could get really good stuff on the ball. Anything hit on the ground that wasn't fielded by the opposition before it got past them was a single; hit on one bounce to the fence was a double; off the fence was a triple and over the fence was a homer.
It was primarily a pitcher's game, but you learned how to hit or you never won.
God knows how I got onto that, but anyway GO CUBBIES, GO BOSOX, GO TIGERS, GO ANYBODY BUT THE YANKS!!!

Lets all celebrate today, as America's team, those damn Yankees have now clinched a playoff berth. They still have an outside chance of capturing 1st, but its more likely they will enter as a wildcard and set up for another classic matchup with the BoSox!
In the words of the great Yogi: "It ain't over, till its over."

And the Yankees are celebrating like they just won the World Series.
When the BoSox secured a play-off spot they were far more subdued . . . much work left to be down. I think the Yanks are so happy just to be in the playoffs they will lose in the first round . . . too many old players, especially pitchers--Clemens is toast, Mussina is over-the-hill, and Petitte is struggling.
A-Rod, of course will fold as usual under pressure.

And supposedly, A-Rod is trying to buy the Cubs! And Mark Cuban ...
Our magic number fell to three with four more games, but it looks like all of the leading teams in the NL are backing their way into the playoffs ... granted, this is normal for Cub Nation, but my heart is getting more and more ragged each day!
Our wild card race is really that--for once. The Padres, Rox, Philly, and Mets are all in it. I'm guessing we won't know who is in until the fat lady sings.

The NL is the league with all the excitement now . . . who is going to win the division and/or make the playoffs?
The Mets are choking . . . where's Pedro?
The AL post-season winners have been decided but the AL East champ has not been decided. The BoSox do have a 3 game lead with 4 to go. Beckett is pitching tonight and the Yankees seem to be sleep-walking the last few games (except for last night)
BoSox win division by two games and go on to the World Series after defeating the Yankees in the ALCs in a rout!

It gets even weirder, Crz ... I read an article about a possible five way tie for the wild card. So, I guess the Cubs should be fortunate they can only go to the playoffs in one manner, by winning the division outright ... if we tie with the Brewcrew, it's us vs. the Baconator in a one game, winner take all, thing on Monday. Of course, our fate is in the hands of Steve Trachsel (the human rain delay) today ... sigh.
I'm for your Sox and Cubs in the World Series (though it won't happen on our end) ...

The rain for those Trachsel delays usually comes on the heels of one of the monstrous homers he gives up disturbing the clouds at high altitudes.

Now, now....lets not forget that the Yankees won 5 of their last 6 games against the BoSox, whose bullpen is no longer what it once was, especially after the great Gagne flop and no Manny Ramirez to worry about. Then there's the resurrected Bambino to consider. One can never discount his influence in the playoffs. The Yanks are content to allow the Sox to capture 1st place, as, like Custer, they would much rather face the Indians than travel to the west coast and take on those nasty Angels.
