And now you know where I got the idea for my avatar ![/color] Kiowa-Apache lodges of Chief Pacer, photographed by Soule in the 1870's near Fort Sill, Ok. The mountain in the background is Mount Scott named in 1852 by General Randolph B. Marcy in honor of Winfield Scott. He had explored the area at that time and recommended the site for Fort Sill. That would not happen until 1869, when General Grierson rescouted the area. Custer and the 7th along with the 19th Kansas were also camped in the area at that time. General Sheridan's ambulance driver drove the first stake making the location for the fort to be built. This view was taken from the road entering the refuge. Off to the right (out of sight) is Lake Lawtonka. I was not able to get a shot from the camp site, it is now underwater after Lake Lawtonka was formed in 1905. Man, as a kid, I crossed Lake Lawtonka from our boathouse and landed on the beach at the foot of Mount Scott and climed all the way to the top. By the way, the fishing there is great too!
