One of my favorite spots on Big Hole Battlefield. This mountain howitzer sits in the location of the original that was overran by the Nez Perce warriors. It took 7 men to position this piece and operate it. The warriors took this position and pushed the gun down the mountain disabling it. From this location you can get a great view of the Indian camp and the walk up is magnificent ! The battle took place on August 9th & 10th, 1877 between Chief Joseph and the 7th U.S. Infantry.

Lawtonka, what a great picture overlooking Big Hole. We spent a few days camping in our RV--please, no anti-RV'g comments, folks--at Lake Como, which is probably 50 miles or so north of Big Hole, and I had the chance to visit AND PASSED ON IT! hUGE BRAIN FART. So now I gotta make that on one of my trips. We did drive over Lolo Pass and headed west, roughly following Lewis & Clark's trail as well as many sites along the same route that the Nez Perce used. So much history, and now I have so much time. Can't wait to hit the road again. But thanks again for the great picture.
