The only differance at the time of this picture was 122 years and Buffalo Skin rather than canvas. Look closely just on the other side of the river above the banks is U.S. Cavalry approaching. This location of this photo was near Medicine Tail Coulee on the Realbird property.

If we can assume the photo may be what it must have been like on June 25, 1876, it is obvious both combatants could see each other. Custer was still on high ground with the river separating each other. It would have given the Indians plenty of time to take action while Custer was looking for a place to cross or make plans.
