Note - #51 According to Nichols, "Men With Custer" R. C. Churchill is Benjamin Franklin Churchill who was present at the LBH as a packer and was hired at the packers rate of$50 per month effective 22 Jun 76. This was not reflected on Nowlan's report.

Did the packers ever get their pay, I wonder? They'd worked only a fraction of a month by the time of LBH. From Bourke's description of Terry's pack train when his and Crook's commands met, it would seem troopers were doing all the packing by then. If the packers chose not to hang around after what they'd been through (understandably enough) maybe Nowlan would have no occasion to account for pay not drawn.
