Not sure if this is the right section ... but here's the full text of an absolutely fascinating 1872 book on New York. It gives an especially fine description of the Fifth Avenue Hotel, where GAC stayed in 1871; also infinite quantities of glorious sociological detail on everything from transport to street musicians to impostors. Very entertaining indeed. A great research resource for historical fiction writers ... (Happy birthday, Tricia, by the way!) infomotions.com/etexts/gutenberg/dirs/1/9/6/4/19642/19642.htm

Okay. I must have that book!
There is another book I can recommend, and since I haven't had a lick of caffeine yet, forgive me if I don't get the author to you until a little later. Entitled Gotham, it is a history of the Big Apple from its inception to 1900. Note: this is a very dense book and one that has been used as a textbook, but it has helped me in my research ... I think it's nowhere near as good as City of the Century, which is about Chicago in the 19th Century, but it is a decent source.
Thanks for the birthday wishes, Elisabeth. I don't look a day over 99 ... --t.

Thanks for the birthday wishes, Elisabeth. I don't look a day over 99 ... --t. That's what you get for being a Cubbies fan, prematurely aged. Happy Birthday! Billy

Well, all the Old Style I've been forced to drink at the Friendly Confines over the years (and years) has preserved me well! Of course, the sign in Wrigleyville looks a little different today:
AC006198 ... perhaps they'll all be zeros after eleven more wins!
Thanks for the good wishes, Billy! All I want for my birthday is World Peace ... and a Cubs' sweep of the Snakies.

Happy Birthday . . . the Cubs gave you a nice present . . . hopefully no Cub fan will interfere with another fly ball again and the Cubs can make it to World Series against, of course, the Red Sox. What a series that would be . . . the two oldest and grandest ball parks in the league with two of the original teams.

Tricia:
I haven't got as far down as the birthdays yet, so let me add my greetings and felicitations to those of your myriad friends and fans.
