In case this hasn't been posted before, here's a very lively account by Bell of his early experiences in the 7th Cavalry: mymilitaryhistorypages.bravehost.com/7thCav-Vignettes.htmI should perhaps add that about 75% of it may be reliable, the rest not. (E.g. he purveys the Custer line on the timing of the cholera epidemic; the "no beef" claim is unlikely to be true since there was a herd of contractors' cattle at Pond Creek Station, which the Indians raided on May 26th 1867 and of which all but five head was recovered; and the "impossible to hunt" claim is contradicted by Keogh's letters. But "apart from that, Mrs. Lincoln ...") Entertaining, none the less. And some useful other stuff on the same page and via the links.

Billy, so sorry -- I should have remembered you'd posted it before ... Elisabeth, the only time you will or will ever have to apologize to me is if you send me a rap album! History is, well, history. I put the stuff up on the web site hoping people will enjoy it and find it useful for their future studies. If I had wanted to keep this "proprietary" I would not post it. While I have a severe dislike for those who may cut-and-paste documents from the web and sell them on Ebay, I have no problems with those who run honest informational sites. My only caveat on material posted at my site is simply give me credit/responsibility for the transcription. I say responsibility because on hand-written documents, sometimes you feel like GAC at MTC and don't know which interpretation is correct. And in the case of the Bell article, I had Diane proof-read my transcription (note: always have Diane as proof-reader!). OK, whining aside, I like the web-site...I do see some things I would change if I had charge of the HTML (no flash and gimmicks) but insofar as the material, OK (unless I see my Ft. Phil Kearny testimony posted up there!) Enjoy your English Summer-especially the hollyhocks! Billy

Billy,
Whoa! I've been called a few things in my time, but 'classy acting' was not one of them! I have a firey blush on these old cheeks. Thank you, sir!
And, as for your "home", I believe that you warned me in a post of awhile ago about the summer heat in this place. I knew you weren't kidding, but frankly.......I'm TOAST!
