The regional archives here in Kansas City has received the records from the Bismark, ND Quartermaster Depot which forwarded quartermaster stores to the varous Montana and Dakota Territory forts. I took the opportunity to go through the Letters Sent indices yesterday and the message book and found a couple of nice things to follow-up on, one being dated 3/22/1876 consisting of a two page listing of ordnance stores delivered to Ft. Abraham Lincoln. Hopefully I can get that copied this week and posted. Also, spotted 20,000 rounds of CPM .50 caliber ammunition destined for Ft. Rice. A follow-up stated that half the ammunition should be left at Rice-if memory doesn't fail-until they saw what need the two Gatlings at Ft. A. Lincoln had. Neat thing about the Letters Received...while the Archives has tried to pull the original and make a copy of documents with valuable signatures, they hadn't done it thoroughly. I had to point out that W.W. Cooke's signature was perhaps a bit more valuable than Lt. Nowland's, as well as the letter signed by James Calhoun, or the one signed by Keogh or the one signed by Gibson for Capt. Benteen. And yes Elisabeth, I will get you a copy of that Keogh letter! Yes, please! And actually, even the Nowlan stuff could be worthwhile. I imagine it's mostly thoroughly workaday QM stuff, but he seems to have left so little in the way of personal correspondence that anything that gives even the faintest glimmer of his personality would be immensely valuable ...
Happy birthday, Billy!
