Steve; I am going to send this caption to my publisher. As GAC pointed out, it will be the first right caption for this photograph.
"The replacement officers of the 7th Cavalry, 1876. The soldier in the rear row right side is 1st Lieutenant Ernest Garlington. Although just graduated in 1876, the attrition of officers at the Little Big Horn provided Garlington a very early promotion. When I first viewed this photograph I thought the man in the center of the rear row was Henry Harrington. All captions dated this photograph to 1875. But the identification of Garlington correctly dates it to 1876. Special thanks to Mr. Steve Wilk who identified Lieutenant Garlington. The close resemblance of these men to the officers they replaced is uncanny."
I can't guarantee they will use it, but I will tell them I want to use it. Thank you very much!

Walt! (pauses to sigh with relief!) When I saw your post's title on the index page, I thought for one horrible moment that I was about to read the boards first obituary! Seriously though, a grand gesture on your part - and well deserved on 'Hawkeye' Wilk's! Regards, George

George; You are so mello-dramatic! I'd have said something like "Goodbye Steve Ole Buddy" or "The Last Bugle call for Steve-oh". ;D
By the way, when I sent that to my editor, I got a bounce back message she had accepted a position some where else and to contact the new editor. Humm, I wonder if this will have any impact on the publication of "Custer's Lost Officer".

Walt, you too kind! I am truly flattered. But we have to thank John Mackintosh, whose synchronous article allowed us to ID Garlington, as well as Diane for kindly posting the photos. I just wish for history's sake we could positively ID the remaining five officers. I just know if one could get a hold of West Point grad photos of the 2Lts with Sturgis in '77, we would see some of those faces. I'm curious why you, an "Okie" would choose Nebraska as a publisher? The University of Oklahoma press is the grandaddy of western history publishers, no? Or did they reject it? What about Upton & Sons? They would publish your book in heartbeat, I would think. Thanks again for crediting me in the caption...my name in a book!

Steve; Where I come from Okie is fightin' words! We are Oklahomans. Actually I am a native Texan.
As for OU Press. First of all I work for Oklahoma State University. The University of Oklahoma is the "other" state university...know what I mean? Actually, before I got deep into the book I asked OU Press if they might be interested. Didn't even get the courtesy of a "no thanks".
The minute I finished it I submitted a synopsis to University of Nebraska Press. They immediately asked me to send the manuscript. So, I respond to those that respond to me. I've thought of Upton, but I'm tired of waiting. I have self published other books, and if it doesn't work out at Nebraska I may do it myself. Its a hassle in some ways, gotta buy ISBN numbers (can't buy just one), get a printer and then a binder together because I think it deserves hard back edition. Anyway, thanks again for your sharp eye! And if I do self publish your name will definitly be in it.
Oh, and ditto what Steve said to Diane, John, and GAC.

Walt,
If you do self publish you're going to need a good cover....I do portraits of all the Seventh officers, privates, scouts, etc....I've done a number of pieces for the Greasy Grass and the LBHA newsletter....would love to do one for you...I would love to do one of Harrington, might do one and submit it to you for approval...let me know!

Fanny; Thanks for your vote of confidence! And your kind words. I was greatly assisted by some Michigan librarians from Coldwater. Mike; I would appreciate anything you want to put your hand to. Here is a link to the cover I have designed if you haven't already seen it. My first inclination as you can see was to publish myself. Its rendered in a scholarly fashion, well footnoted at the end of each chapter and with a bibliography and etc. Both photographs are from West Point. bronzestar.tripod.com/7thuscavalrycusterslostofficer/Walt

Walt,
Your book cover design is quite good..it gets right to the point. Will it be in Black and white? I don't know how the Unv. of Neb. press operates...do they let you design your own cover? Some publishers insist on designing the covers...that's the great thing about self publishing, no one to argue with except yourself....anyway I hope they put some color in somewhere, on the underlay sheet or something but the design is very effective. A black & white portrait painting would not be that effective I don't think, but if you do color I would love to do one for you...but check with the publisher, like I said , some insist on doing it in their design dept., and the U OF Neb. press put out a first rate product....do good work.I did the cover art for Doug Ellison's Mystery of the Rosebud book...but that was just a pen & ink that was originally in the Greasy Grass magazine. I think you did a good job on the design though...like I said...the cover does grab you....keep me in mind in the future though....Good luck Walt! it looks quite interesting and should sell quite well.

Mike; Thanks. I think the black and white is very effective in this case. Not sure what background color would add to the overall rather startling images. I sent this along to Nebraska as a suggestion, I'm sure you are right, they will likely want to do the cover. I have enjoyed the independence of self publishing, if you follow the link from the Harrington site you will see some of my other works. And I appreciate your good wishes, thanks. I will definitely keep you in mind.
