Hello all,
I was delighted to find this board. A bit about myself and why I'm here: I have always been something of a Custer buff but the Little Bighorn has always played second fiddle to the Civil War in my studies. I've read the standard secondary sources over the years, but it's only recently that I've really been getting an increased interest in the Little Bighorn. I'm diving into the sea of conflicting accounts and trying to make sense of it all, with some partial success! ;D I currently live in Virginia just outside of DC, hence the Lt. Reilly moniker. Visiting Reilly's grave in Mt. Olivet is a bit of the reason for my renewed interest in LBH. I'm absolutely dying to get to the battlefield (went as a kid, and although I was already a history buff, of course there was only so much I appreciated) and want to do the research and plan a big trip up there. Anyway, I will be mostly reading the information given by you more knowledgeable folks and will be pestering you with (hopefully semi-intelligent) queries about the battle and visiting the battlefield.
Glad to be here!

ltreilly,
May I be the first to welcome you to these boards. This will be an enjoyable experience for you. Sounds like you have some basic info on GAC under your belt. You will find, as I have, that all you really need here is a desire to learn, because the highly intellectual individuals here are so willing to share and teach. I do believe there is always room for many more, so welcome aboard!
I am Montana born and bred, and a student myself, so I will enjoy your thoughts!

Nice to have you on board, Mr. Reilly, though I believe our intrepid lieutenant spelled his name with only one "L." (I may be wrong about that, because I have seen it spelled with 2.) Billy Reily is one of my favorite LBH characters because he spent some time flunking out of my alma mater, right there in Washington, D. C. Plus, despite his tender years, I find him to be the most distinguished looking of all the men of the Seventh Cavalry.
So welcome to our madhouse, the brainchild of the brilliant Mrs. Diane Merkel.
Best wishes, Fred.

Thank you both for the kind welcome.
Fred, I believe you are entirely correct. I would have to dig out my picture of Reily's grave to confirm, but I think 1 L is correct (but moreover, I'm sure you know a heck of a lot more than I do about it!). It looks like 2 L's pops up a lot, but this is wrong. Glad that I'm already learning stuff here.

Welcome to the board, Reily [who was called Van, not Billy (I just made that up)]. You will get along fine with Fred, who is our resident expert at answering semi-intelligent questions, being eminently qualified to do so. For intelligent questions....................................
Gordie, I can't help myself, I love you and nobody else.............................................................

Now wait a minute, gentlemen! Our resident black cloud, DC, gives some of the most entertaining answers I've read on these boards! He doesn't need a lightweight like me (do I wish!) defending him, but we must give him his just due. Don't we? Bab

BaB:
That's why I was gonna suggest him for the intelligent questions. I simply thought that might be slightly presumptuous on my part, and that dc might think I was being snide or sarcastic , which I wouldn't have been being [past pluperfect or something]. I actually agree that dc gives some of the most cogent arguments on this board, and can be consistently relied upon for facts as opposed to opinion [no sycophant fees required].
Gordie, wait a minute, wait a minute, Mister Postman..............................................................

Gordie, You, snide or sarcastic? NEVER! Now, I know this is way off the subject, but somewhere in these threads from quite awhile back, I thought Fred mentioned that you had written nearly 20 books! Are there any available, or a list, or a publisher one can notify? ? Would love to know! B&B

Montana:
Fred was being apocryphal or something. I haven't even READ 20 books!! Seriously, I have no idea where Fred thinks he got that information - I'm sure he was being facetious, if you look at the context . If I were a noted author [as opposed to writer], I probably would be inclined to trumpet it to the world [or at least this board].
Probably.......................
Gordie, I got a hot-rod Ford and a two dollar bill, and I know a spot right over the hill, where the soda pop and the dancin' is free, so if you wanna have fun, come along with me....................l

"Apocryphal," my kiester! The guy's a noted scholar and Elisabeth is the curator of the Tate and the Imperial War Museum. She is also the vice-chairwoman of Sandhurst's board of regents. She is also the main contributor to the quasi-secret German General Staff. Gordie hides behind this "harpskiddie" claptrap: you'd be stunned to know who he really is, advisor to several presidents (though not the currect one... thank God). It's not easy to dig up this information on these people, but if you read enough of their posts, study their written syntax, take notes of their opinions, follow their likes and dislikes, then start connecting their message board work with writings sparsely maintained on the Internet, and bingo!, you have it. We are in the midst of brilliance here... Best wishes, Stone, the Philosopher.
