The Fort Meade Cavalry Museum is just located a short distance north outside Sturgis. The museum has quite a bit in it about the history of the military in the Black Hills and when the 7th Cavalry was stationed at the post. Many of the buildings on the post date from the years shortly after its founding.
Laurie and I frequently stop to visit both the post and the military cemetery. You might need directions to find the cemetery and they have a reasonably priced guide to the graves at the museum gift shop. It is worth the time and the money. It is my opinion that you can not really understand the history of the Black Hills without learning the role of the military there.
