Hagerstown will be the headquarters for the 2008 LBHA Conference, and they are planning to place historic markers throughout the area. George Armstrong Custer nearly died in Hagerstown 13 years before he met his fate during the Battle of the Little Bighorn.
The date was July 12, 1863.
Custer was standing in the bell tower of the Zion Reformed Church on North Potomac Street observing the Confederate retreat from Gettysburg when a sniper fired an errant shot that instead struck one of the tower’s bells. Article: tinyurl.com/yshhjz

Fred:
Just saw your post. No. It's way too far for me. I'm gonna be at LBH and Wood Mountain next year.

On July 12, 1863, Union cavalry under the command of Gen. George Armstrong Custer rode into Hagerstown and dove out dozens of Confederate soldiers who were occupying the city.
The Confederates entered Hagerstown on July 6, during their retreat from the Battle of Gettysburg a few days earlier, and held the city until Custer's decisive charge. Before the Confederates relinquished their grip, however, battles raged in the city's streets, houses and graveyards.
This story and others recounting the Battle of Hagerstown are inscribed on two signs that hang on the parking garage off North Potomac Street. Article: www.herald-mail.com/?module=displaystory&story_id=175725&format=html
