A company of the 7th cavalry, under Albert Barnitz, was stationed in the oxbows of Big Creek (a branch of the Smoky Hill river) just west of the current town of Ellis, for several months, in order to protect the railroad workers from attack. Ellis (and the oxbows) are 15 miles west of Ft. Hays.
