Tom Goodrich posts an interesting article about Daniel Kanipe (by David A. Norris) on his WildWest blog: wildwestblogcom.blogspot.com/2007/09/from-montana-to-mountain-dew.htmlThe article talks about Kanipe's life as a revenuer: In September 1909, Kanipe and several agents raided a still near Tryon, NC. One moonshiner in a nearby watchtower fired a warning shot, and "the man in charge of the still fled and has been fleeing since." Riding back to Tryon, Kanipe was sitting in the back of their carriage when an angry moonshiner let loose a shotgun blast. The shotgun was fired from too long a distance to seriously hurt Kanipe. He was able to make light of the incident and show off the holes in his coat.As they say, read the whole thing... dan

Thank you, Dan. A woman recently bought the October 2006 issue of the LBHA Newsletter, which had a hand-tinted photo of Kanipe on the cover courtesy of our very own Scout. She bought it for her friend who restored Kanipe's house in Marion, North Carolina. I love this little tidbit she sent me: Coincidentally, the man who bought the house is an evacuee from New Orleans and Hurricane Katrina. Known as the Wizard of Bourbon Street, he read tarot cards and palms. Kanipe's wife, Ann Missouri, was also a spiritualist. [The current owner] believes their ghosts inhabit the house. Some people here want to prevent him from practicing his art. Probably not any different from 120 years ago.
