A Custer-rich issue, by the looks of things: not only the Frank Finkel article that's already been discussed, but also one by Jeff Broome on Custer's first Indian fight, and one by Jeffry Wert on the Custer-Libbie relationship. To say nothing of Michno on Clara Blinn. Here are the details: www.historynet.com/magazines/wild_west/6937282.htmlP.S. Just received the LBHA Newsletter today, and see that this is mentioned in it. So my apologies for handing out old news ...

Re this issue ... could anybody do me an immense favour?
I've just taken out a subscription to Wild West Magazine, but they now tell me it won't start for many weeks, and that they can't backdate it to start with the June issue. So I thought I'd be clever and order the June issue from their online Back Issues department. Foiled again: the ordering procedure turns out to be set up to accept orders only from the USA and Canada.
So ... is there anyone who'd be kind enough to mail me a copy? Ideally, someone with a PayPal account, so that I can pay you back for its cost and shipping without delay? I'd be ever so grateful.

Elisabeth,
I'd love to help you, but I can't find Wild West in my part of Florida. If no one else comes forward, I'll be pleased to order it as a back issue and mail it to you.

Elisabeth--I'll try to get a couple of copies--if I succeed, I won't have to mail it!

Are you going to England, Melani?

Yes, May 23-June 6. Then a wild week back and work, and off to LBH. It's our first major family vacation in years, and the first time in England for me. But I still haven't figured out how to contact Wild West!

Here's their toll-free number: 800-829-3340.
If that doesn't get you anywhere, let me know. I've corresponded with the publisher in the past, so I've got his e-mail address somewhere.
Will you be meeting Elisabeth?
I'm green with envy about both of your trips. Have a great time!

I will run by Border's tomorrow after the doctor is finished giving me my bi-centennial physical and see if they have it. The only things which may save Elisabeth's PayPal account are the facts that I just spent my birthday present plus at B&N (no fiction by the way) and Jeff Broome's recent mail to me. E may end up with a couple of dozen of the things! Billy

Billy, Melani, Diane,
A million thanks ... but no need for such sacrifices after all, as someone's just kindly PM'd me with the offer of a copy. Much, much appreciated, though. Good luck with the physical, Billy.
So sorry to have put you all to so much trouble. I'd assumed the magazine would be on every newsstand in the US -- had no idea it was so difficult to get!
Yes, Melani and I are hoping to meet up at some point during the trip. Exciting, eh? Well, it is for me, at any rate ... Melani, you'll be pleased to hear that it's more or less stopped raining at last, so with a bit of luck you'll get to see the place in sunshine. Hope so, anyway!

Will you be meeting Elisabeth? I'm green with envy about both of your trips. Have a great time! Well, of course! And at this point, hand-delivering the copy of Wild West I picked up this morning at Barnes and Noble. (At this rate, Elisabeth will have to open a magazine stand to get rid of the extra issues!) Borders didn't have it. It's a really great issue, and features, God help me, a photo of Custer's...er...athletic supporter! Somebody elsewhere mentioned trying to explain to your spouse why you want to spend your vacation time looking at a pencil--try to explain this one! ;D When my husband sees that picture, I will never hear the end of it!

That little contraption, including the label showing it was size "small," used to be on display at the battlefield's museum. I know it was there in the early 90s.

Ah, the perils of fame--your underwear as a museum exhibit. Not as bad as poor Sgt. Wyllyams, I guess.

I tried the search feature, but all I got was this post.

Melani, [Aside: Ever since you told us you were named for the GWTW character, I want to call you Meli or Mellie.] Scroll down to the bottom of the boards and use the Google search box. It's a lot better than the internal one. Put the radio button on lbha.proboards12.com and search for Finkel from there. It will pull up all mentions from all threads. Diane
