Sorry, all, but the blog has changed and the info I passed along in this reply is no longer available. Some of the following posts may not make sense.

Diane, et al, I don't know if any of you have heard of the story of the North Platte Canteen during WWII. I had never heard of North Platte until I read an article in the Parade section of the Sunday paper a couple years ago. It's truly a stirring story of a patriotic little county town during WWII and the relationships they established with the thousands of young American men coming through on the trains carrying them to the war in Europe. I had no idea of the history of North Platte as it relates to us--students of the Indian Wars. I hope I can make it there next year.

I think Tom has been hanging around the Custerholics a bit too much as his blog from yesterday (11/27) entitled "The Eternal Custer" included this quote: "While it is true that Custer was perhaps the man most instrumental in crushing the culture of the plains Indian tribes, it is also true that, like his counterpart, Crazy Horse, he was a warrior through and through." While I agree with the latter portion of the quote, i.e., Custer as a warrior; I am forced to say balderdash about his statement about GAC being "the man most instrumental in crushing the culture of the plains Indian tribes..."!
Me thinks that Carr, Mackenzie, Hatch, Wood/Palmer and the men of their cavalry regiments are spinning in their graves at that one!
Be good,
Billy

Yeah, but Tom gave LBHA a nice plug . . . . Yes, that he did. You will have to excuse me as I am distracted by two phenomena; one natural and one decidedly unnatural. The natural one is an Ice Storm Warning just issued for the area beginning at lunch today (already freezing drizzle outside.) The second and more mind-boggling one is the fact that DC has remotely suggested that he will do some research. I am having a hard time getting my head around that concept! Billy

Billy, maybe Tom's statement, "While it is true that Custer was perhaps the man most instrumental in crushing the culture of the plains Indian tribes ... " he was referring more to Custer's defeat, which had a significant effect on "crushing the culture." No?
