Yep, clw. Twins. And to think, it was only a year ago when they loosed themselves upon Red State America ... but I think I'll pass on the avatar.
Would Custer gamble, Crazee? Does a bear poop in the woods?

Re possible court-martial: see the "Col. Carrington on Custer" thread for a statement re W. A. Graham's opinion that if Custer had lived, he'd have faced charges over his activities in Washington regardless of the outcome of the battle. Re "disobeying orders": if he'd lost and lived, Terry would have needed a scapegoat. He was a lawyer; he'd have had no difficulty establishing points where Custer had departed from his orders. (If only in the failure to send Herendeen up Tullock's Creek.) Re bankruptcy: in February 1876 he'd taken out a 6-month loan of some $8,500 at a rate of 7% interest. The note would fall due in August -- long before he could have earned anything from the lecture tour. And even a two-star general didn't earn that much. In any case, after offending Grant, he could only hope for promotion if a Democrat administration came in. The election wasn't until November. So whatever happened, he was in deep doo-doo financially. Re divorce: OK, a long shot, but read Shirley A. Leckie, Elizabeth Bacon Custer and the Making of a Myth, Chapter 8, for their earlier marital troubles. It's not impossible. Re showbiz career: well, he'd signed that Redpath-Lyceum Bureau contract ... Apart from that, yes, entirely ridiculous. Note to self----beat Brokensword over head for right to spend time listening to Elisabeth!

Claw--
I think it was "clw" who said it best: our girl's a Rhodes Scholar in this stuff. Utterly brilliant... I can think of no other term.
Best wishes, Fred.

Markland-
While we could (like old-fashioned knights) joust for an audience with the fair Elisabeth, I must warn you that I have a pretty hard head. (I can supply affidavits from more than one ex-wife to attest to that) I also have a nagging suspicion that a number of others here have equally hard heads.
SO! - perhaps we can form ourselves into a committee of sorts and travel to her. Or, we might pool resources and arrange to bring Elisabeth here to sit at our fire and hold council with us. Not a bad idea, but its rather a selfish one. A number of the members here are already ‘over there.’
Ah! I have it. A meeting in a neutral pub - ‘over there.’ It’s the only fair way to deal with it. Our group might even attract a few locals away from their discussions of football. (Although, that would be difficult.) My biggest personal problem is how to get there with two four-draw file cabinets strapped to my back. I would need all those files just to hold my own in the discussion.
Oh! And Fred buys the first round.

Trisha-
I read somewhere that one reason for Custer's denying DeRudio command of Company E, was that Gen'l George thought DeRudio a 'gambler'!
Isn't there some saying about a pot and a kettle?

I strongly suspect that the "single-malt" & "double-malt" labels simply mean that the "double-malt" has been diluted with bat droppings while the "single-malt" is undiluted. I had better get my licks in at the Rat today because after tomorrow he won't talk to me. Have a good day, Billy

Sounds like just the brew to kick it off with! - Count me in and dip me a large mug from the bucket.
Fred- Are you referring to moi?!
Among others
Fred (again) - Oh, no ya don't! I saw her first!
Fair enough - but I WILL have stenographers present to write it all down

I wonder what great Custer lessons can be learned from this week's number one movie: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ...
(thanks for the props, Montana, but I just know Custer)
