In Universal’s second pitch purchase of the day, the studio has snapped up Matthew Sands’ spec script American By Blood.
Adapted from Andrew Huebner’s book, the story follows three US Army scouts who are the first to find the bloody aftermath of the Battle of Little Bighorn, the site of Custer’s last stand. They’re then dispatched to find the Sioux leader, Crazy Horse.
The book and its adaptations have had a ride through Hollywood already – Kathleen Kennedy for originally optioned it for Steven Spielberg, though the project collapsed after various writers failed to get the script to work. Huebner had considered refusing to allow it to be optioned again, but was convinced by Sands (and, presumably, more money). With Kennedy still on board to produce, it’ll now begin the dangerous journey through development hell.
