Personally, I think Gary Oldman could play the entire regiment (you do the computer graphics)! His range is simply amazing. I agree with Scout, however. If this is gonna be a true Oliver Stone project, he's gonna have to deal with the conspiracy aspect. The four hour long bio-pic version of SOMS has been done before, so I'm guessing Stone will highlight but a few of the later chapters and go from there.

The movie could start with the survivors of the 7th being rescued . . . and Terry asking: "What happened here?" Benteen replies: "Mistakes were made . . ."
Then we cut to the courtroom . . .

bhist, it's a shame you've got it in for Fox. In reading the message boards and your responses, you seem to be the only one who really has no respect for Fox's work. Almost like a vendetta. What a shame. Elizabeth – If I come across as having a vendetta against Fox, then that is completely unintentional. I have nothing but the highest respect for him. Fox spoke at the first cbhma symposium I chaired and participated on more than one of my panel discussions over the years. Now, I may disagree with some of his theories, but that is as far as it goes. I state all this for the record before others may take the idea and run with it.

Sounds nice, crzhrs!
The press release that came out last October or so said it was going to be "a political thriller" -- so conspiracy of some kind is sure to come into it. Whether he'll be happy with just the post-battle cover-up, or will go wafting off into the wild blue yonder with the evil-Grant-plots-Custer's-assassination nonsense, who can tell. You never know, he might even do the history, properly. The real thing has more than enough political-thriller aspects to it, heaven knows!
It's still the same screenwriter on board from the time of the October press release: Mark Wheaton. So it looks as if they've had the script sorted out for quite some time. If they truly have now got Mortensen signed up -- well, I don't think he'd go for anything totally daft, after the flak he had to take for "Hidalgo"'s wilder fictions. Could be OK ...

Bob -- sorry -- wasn't me who said you had a vendetta! Glad you've stated your position, though; things can so easily get misunderstood or over-inflated.
I do agree with you that trying to graft a Fox ending onto the entirely impressionistic and emotional "Marching to Valhalla" scenario would have been a dog's dinner of colossal proportions. Much better that they've abandoned "Valhalla" completely. (There were rumours at one time that Chiaventone would form the basis, which would have been great; maybe they'll build in bits of that?) But if they even show something faintly recognisable as the battle, with or without Fox-type details, it'll be pretty much a first ...
Has anyone seen the movie "Waterloo"? (Yes, of course you all have.) Now that is an absolute model of clarity. If only more battle movies followed that pattern, rather than using the "fog of war" excuse to make the action incomprehensible! (Grumble, grumble, grumble ...)

Elizabeth – When I studied mass communications, as an undergraduate, PCs didn’t exist. No one had any idea what an Internet might look like – at least not the general public. One of the biggest issues was communicating over the phone; information could easily be misunderstood or lost. Now, we write notes via the web, which is much more fragile than a phone.
But, what I’m really interested in is “Waterloo.” I haven’t seen the film – might not be aware of it, but please tell me who the director is and if its on DVD? Sounds like one I want to check.

Is this for real? Is there really going to be a re-make of the movie? And isn't that the fellow who played in Hidalgo? I liked that movie; even went out & bought it. Sorry for the late notice, but I just saw that Hidalgo is on AMC (American Movie Channel?) tonight. It's on at 7 pm Central and again at 4 am Central. If Fred liked it, I'm watching it!

From the web
"Synopsis: America's youngest and most decorated civil war general details Custer's battle with U.S. Grant, then-president, over military corruption and Custer's potential bid for the White House. "
Son Of The Morning Star is based on Evan Connell's best seller, and centres around the story of another great leader. That of George Armstrong Custer, whose last stand at the Little Big Horn in 1876 is now part of folklore.
The screenplay by Mark Wheaton has turned the infamous western story into a political thriller.
Perhaps spurred on by taking a more controlled approach to his 9/11 film, Stone is now back in the political waters where he swims best.
The film itself is due to be released in 2007. Check back later for confirmation of the cast and a release date.

According to a recent interview with Oliver Stone--done at the release of Twin Towers--he said he is not doing Son of the Morning Star and the internet is outdated information. He mentioned that he had several other projects along the pipeline and not to expect a rework of the Connell tale anytime soon.

Let's hope someone else will pick up the script, then. Or maybe it'll leave the way open for another version of the story?
