Stumbled on a terrific book in a second-hand shop yesterday: The American Civil War by Earl Schenck Miers. It tells the story through the contemporary illustrations in Harper's, Leslie's, etc. There's some fabulous stuff: all the battles we know and love, of course -- plus vignettes of life in camp or on the march -- plus breathtaking pictures of naval engagements between ironclads, blockade-running, and so on -- and, and, and ... The text is good, too: concise, yet packed with detail and revealing quotations. Highly recommended.
