Has anyone purchased or read the volumes of this encyclopedia by Dan L Thrapp? My own experiences with it being used as secondary source by a multitude of writers indicates that it is a worthwhile purchase.
Having asked the question, I will likely purchase volume 1, A-F as a leap of faith in Thrapp's abilities as a historian plus I have a 25% off coupon from Barnes & Noble. ;D
Merry Christmas,
Billy

Billy:
I don't own any of the three volumes, but I have used them as reference tools in the past and found Thrapp to be very useful. He seems to devote most of his energies to the southwest, Arizona in particular, in his overall work, and I know he has done some stuff on old military posts.
My interests aren't as far-flung as are your own, in terms of the military on the frontier, or on frontier life in general. My guess is that you will find this set very valuable to you - certainly in terms of pointers to more detailed studies of individuals and events. Abebooks has some very reasonably-priced volumes, running from 10 0r 11 bucks to around 25 dollars each. I don't know how that will compare to your B&N deal.
Good reading!!!

PS: I see from the battlefield cams that there is no snow so far. If you follow through on your planned trip, do you think you might swing by New Westminster and pick me up? I'll chip in on the gas. It ain't that far out of the way.

Gordie, just between yourself and the other couple of dozen regulars and the hundreds of visitors; I went to TELL the wife that I was going to Ft. Phil Kearny for the anniverary. Then it happened....all I can say is that I totally understand how confident GAC started out feeling on the morning of the 25th and really, really understand how he felt when he had those couple of seconds of reflection to wonder, "What the <expletive deleted> happened!"
All I remember were two pairs of big brown eyes looking at me, something said about "taking me snowboarding" and a pointed observation that while those guys have been dead for 140 years, someone else will not remain a child that long.
At least GAC had something to blame it on, whether splitting at MTC, Benteen, Reno or just acid reflux; in my case, I simply was routed!

Billy:
I know what those brown eyes can do. Gee, that sounds like a song lyric to me. Lemme get my guitar............................
Sorry that you're gonna miss your trip; but I'm sure that your boarding trip will make up for the loss. As I'm sure you had guessed, I was being facetious about your picking me up. New West is a fair chunk from Story - about four days round trip, depending on the route.
Enjoy your snow and your Holidays. All the best.

The two volumes ordered Monday night arrived very quickly, yesterday, and I totally love them! I'll be ordering the third and last volume as soon as I can (read, when I get a good coupon!)
The really nice thing is that I have been able to add a couple of other reference books to the "need to get" list. There are two Brinstool <sp> books in particular I want to check. It sounds like a case for using inter-library loan.
Merry Christmas to all,
One-handed Billy
P.S. Pinched/aggravated/abused a nerve in the right arm and now that wrist and hand are useless appendages.
