you'll like the art work in the book. Fascinating painting done from on the spot sketches. Nice slice of life.
What did you pay for it?

Far more than I should have! Hate to say it, but ... $50. There was a cheaper copy available from another website, but I didn't get the "secure page" notice coming up on that one, so didn't dare buy there. Turns out that Louis Philippe's lads were there in force -- three of them! There's a nice photo of them here: 712educators.about.com/blcwphmilgrp4.htmAnd one of them -- I can't remember now (a whole 24 hours later, after all!) if it was the Comte de Paris or the Prince de Joinville -- wrote a history of the CW and a study of Gettysburg. The few quotes I found while googling were very sharply written, so they could be interesting. I might try and track hem down -- but not till I get next month's pay!

I spent $45 on my good copy about 3 years ago. so $50 seems a good price. It's quite a reasure and most book dealers don't realize what a trivia of custeriana they have.
In fact, several LBHA members I know had never heard of the book or that sketch. I sure hadn't until I stumbled across it.

alfuso,
The book arrived today. It's gorgeous. The Stoneman portrait is breathtakingly good. And the Custer one is hilarious! Thanks again for the recommendation.

Elisabetn
Got my copy of The Great Injun CArnival today. It came from Powell's out of Oregon! So why did I pay L for it? And a pretty good hunk of L in shipping.
Bizarre.
anyway it's here and so much fun to read agaon (I KNOW I have a copy arouund somewhere but it's in that same black hole with assorted socks and scissors)
Custer takes the 7th Cavalry on a trip to a large Injun Carnival, keeping a daily diary:
"May 23, 1876
"The only good Injun is one that I can get to before some other general does. Today we found a few stragglers hiding in the footnoes of a Ph.D dissertation. We naturally went after them. But in the confusion of cross referencing, they got away. What we needed was an automatic pitching machine like the one invented by Dick Gatling. Yup, a quick-firing baby that spits out 600 baseballs per minute. Each one autographed and lethal. That's what I call Injunuity."
The book is hysterical.
