I suspect my account is getting ready to take a hit as yesterday I just discovered the books edited by Leroy Hafen, two of which I really, really want. They are Relations With Plains Indians 1857-1861 and Powder River Campaigns and Sawyer's Expedition 1865.
Some background first. I had a thought while driving over to Leavenworth yesterday (concerning the Spencer carbine and C Co., 2d Cav. at Fetterman) and wanted to see if the Frontier Army Musuem had the answer. They did not but museum director, Steve Allie, was nice enough to let me wander through their library which contains several hundred out-of-print books (he eventually will get the drool marks off the carpet).
My question to you all is which dealers do you have success with in obtaining out-of-print books. I have used Old West before and am perfectly happy with their services but I really don't feel up to paying $150 for the Powder River book, yet. From a cursory web search, there are many, many more dealers out there and knowing my audience, I feel that many of you have have availed yourself of their services. Feel free to PM me with the information.
Thanks in advance,
Billy

After scrolling through the list of books for sale by custerbooks.com that Treasuredude so kindly provided I ran across a title that is priced at $35.00 ( Fighting Indian Warriors ) by Brininstool. Within the last week, I found this very book, in excellant condition while searching through old books in an antique shop. Paid $8.50. Lesson learned: sometimes it pays to get down low on your knees and sort through all those dusty books on the bottom shelf hidden behind stacks of old LPs that nobody wants. I'm smiling.

We have a couple of other book dealers within LBHA who are all excellent. Check the Member Services page of the main website. If you are looking for something really special, Frank Mercatante in Grand Rapids is incredible. He's not online but can find real treasures. About a year ago, he called us because he knew we collected the Shoulder Strap editions. He found one that we didn't even know existed. He hadn't ever seen it before either. It cost a bit more than $8.50 but who needs to eat?

It cost a bit more than $8.50 but who needs to eat? I keep telling my son that college is over rated and you can't have too many Custer books. ;D

Treasuredude--
Your Website is a lot of fun & your pictures are absolutely great! The only thing missing is a baby-photo of Perry Baker.
Best wishes, Fred.

I've had a lot of success with bookfinder.com and Upton & Sons.
My account is taking a hit too -- just found the complete set of Caroll's Cavalry Scraps, signed and numbered.

Treasuredude--
The "words" are deserved. Some of those pictures are stunning. I'm going to be at the LBH some time in mid-April. I hope my puny little digital camera can manage pictures 1/10th as nice as yours.
Best wishes, Fred.

alfuso -- where? where? where?!!!? I've been looking for that for ages!!!! Green with envy.
Alibris.com is pretty good sometimes, and I've also had good luck with biblio.com. (They have a book-search facility, as well as a good in-stock list.) Also Books4U.com has turned up trumps a few times; very good on comparison pricing.

Billy, If you haven't already done so, check out the U.S. Cavalry Research Library on Fort Riley, KS. They have some pretty rare books. They also have quite a bit of newspaper articles and such. Worth a visit if you are in the area. Bob

Elizabeth
the Cav Scraps I am buying is the complete 13 book set by Carroll, signed and numbered. Cavalry Scraps, writings of Benteen, so far no one can find. But I have feelers out.
The thing I like about Bookfinder.com is it searches many of the other bookfinders, including alibris.
One gem I have from alibris is the Compe de Paris books of sketches he did during the CW when attached to Mcclellan. Made them into watercolors later. One is of the aide, Capt Custer looking like he dressed out of a jumbly sale. Wearing his hat with brims drawn up in that style we associate with soldiers on the plains. Title is "Future General"
That is one I didn't even know existed until I stumbled over some pages from it being sold separately (they are on very heavy stock so that they can be mounted, but why tear up the book?) Spent some years hunting the book down. Got two copies for a pittance. One copy is in a case. Case is faded from blue to magenta, but book is in pristine shape.
It was compiled and put out about 20 years ago or so.
Sometimes I have gotten some gems from eBay. Sometimes I plug in "Custer" to a book site and see what comes up.
Right now I would maime to get another copy of "The Great Injun Carnival" Hysterical little book of GAC's "diary" on way to a LBH carnival. I can't find my copy. I KNOW it's here somewhere, but it's gotten into a black hole. You know, that one where socks and scissors go.

As you guessed, it's the Benteen one I've been looking for ... That Comte de Paris thing sounds glorious. I must hunt it down! P.S. Prepare to maim! Amazon.co.uk have a copy! www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0930674073/203-5855038-1769513I haven't yet checked to see whether the seller's UK-based, and if so whether he/she/it does international shipping. If it's UK-only, I could get it for you if you like ...?

Great! I see it's Powells, so you should have no problem -- but if you do, happy to oblige.
And thanks for the Comte de Paris info. Found a copy!
Trivia note: Especially excited about this because (as I should have remembered) he's a son of King Louis Philippe ... and Louis Philippe once stayed in the house in Burgundy where my brother and his wife now live! So they'll be thrilled to see this too. At last, a flicker of interest within the family about 19th-century American history ...!
