Well, it could have been worse - just imagine what tales we might have had if Goldin had been successful in his quest to become Superintendent!!!!!

My copy of "The Saga of Keogh, Comanche, and Custer" arrived two days ago. Really fast shipping and the company sent me an e mail the day it shipped (same day I ordered on line). Its a fun, little read. I'm glad I picked up a copy.

The "new" Luce book is a major disappointment. Don't waste your money unless you must own everything printed about LBH.
The clue is in the description of the book as being a "derivative monograph." I haven't checked the entire thing, but it appears that S. Edward Luce (who claims to be a cousin of Edward S. Luce) did not use direct quotes from Luce's book but, rather, combined paragraphs from Luce's writing to create an entirely different book. Case in point, Chapter 3, "Comanche," borrows some descriptive words from two separate paragraphs of the original's Chapter 2 in order to describe the horse. Bizarre to say the least!
As if the total fraud were not enough, the grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors throughout are enough to send any English major to the looney bin.
DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY.

Diane:
Thanks for the tip. I had a sneaking superstition that might be the case.
Scout:
Most Of Shakespeare was written by Marlowe.

Diane...bummer, mine's on the way. I was hoping for a slice of history more than anything...looks like I won't even get that.
Gordie: It's just like the LBH...there's no absolute.

Diane and Scout, my apologies for luring you into buying the thing. What a shame.

"derivative monograph" was enough to let me know to stay clear of this one.

Elisabeth...not to worry....it looked interesting and I've bought lots of books based on that alone. I would have bought it anyway based on the Luce connection.
Happy New Year!

Thanks for the absolution ... and happy New Year to you, too!
I feel especially guilty because I've not yet bought it myself -- simply because of the publishers' failure to answer my e-mails enquiring about international shipping. Tell you what: Diane, if you loathe the thing so much that you want it out of the house -- but have not yet used it as a firelighter -- maybe I could buy your copy? Add on whatever it takes for the shipping costs (and the annoyance!) and I can pay for it by PayPal. That way, we'll both be happy!

Thank you, Elisabeth, but Chuck is one who wants everything about LBH, so he is OK with it. I gave it to him for Christmas, and he's already gone through it and penciled comments in the margins. If you want it, I can order it and mail it to you. The shipping shouldn't be much.
I don't understand why Luce the Younger produced the book that way. Chuck thinks that the Elder's widow is still living, so perhaps he couldn't get permission to reprint the original book.

Thanks for the kind offer, Diane -- but I'm sure I'll get some sense out of them sooner or later. (The run-up to Christmas is never the best time to expect quick responses!) And from your description, it's clearly not the most urgent of must-haves ...
I'm sure Chuck's right: it does have the sound of a conscious paraphrase job. Astounding to think that Mrs. Luce might still be with us. You'd think that she'd take a reprint as a compliment to the Elder ... but "there's no accountng for folks", as we say over here. (And no doubt over there too).
I bet Chuck's marginal notes are worth reading!! Memories of Benteen's in My Lie, I'd imagine. ----- Now there's a reprint to dream of: an edition of My Life on the Plains complete with Benteen's comments ... If only!!

It exists! We've seen certain pages of it. It is owned by Benteen's descendants in Houston.

wow...would love to read those comments! Can you imagine? now there would be an interesting book to read.
I read through Mr. Utley's book looking for any info on Evelyn Luce dying. There was no mentioning of it...she was born in 1907...so 100 next year if alive.
