Trying to bring some less controversial topic to our attention, I thought we could talk about some of our favorite western artists.
I collect art books that specialize in artists that portray the Old West in all it's glory. I say "all it's glory" because no doubt much of it is romanticized. I have art books by Howard Terpning (2), James Bama, Frank McCarthy, Kenneth Riley, Tom Lovell, Robert Griffing (eastern woodlands), Paul Calle, Karl Bodmer, George Catlin, Charlie Russell, Frederic Remington, Alfred Jacob Miller. Then of course there are the Native American ledger drawing art books including:
Bear's Heart: Scenes from the Life of a Cheyenne Artist Pictographic History of the Oglala Sioux by Amos Bad Heart Bull Cheyenne Sketchbook by Cohoe Cheyenne Dog Soldiers: A Ledgerbook History of Coups
My favorite contemporary artist might be Howard Terpning, but it's just too close to call. There are quite a few other great artists out there too, but I am not aware of any book that portrays their talents (Jim Norton, Richard Luce, Stephen Lang, to name a few, but by no means all).

Historynut--
I bought a Richard Luce print (what do they call it? a "glicle" or something like that, what "that" is!) a number of months ago, & lo & behold, it is the same one appearing on the latest "Research Review." I like Luce's stuff & intend to buy a few more.
Best wishes, Fred.

Oh, by the way, my wife bought a small print by Patrick Hill (Center of the Circle) at the LBH visitor's center in April. It is of a Crow warrior mounted on his horse. A beautiful little thing.

Fred, I bought the Luce print too. Like it. Although I commented to Richard Luce that I thought he made the troopers look much older than they were. Most were in their early to mid twenties. I told him Sharrow was only 33 but the Sgt. Maj. in the painting looks 53. Luce said the model for that was a retired Sgt. Major who served in Nam and wanted badly to be in the painting. And so he is.

Steve--
I think at that point in the battle, those guys had aged about 20 years (!) so Luce may not have been that far off!! I like the story of the retired SGM-- I like it a lot!
Thanks.
Best wishes, Fred.

For some excellent drawings/paintings on Native Americans try to find THE MYSTIC WARRIORS OF THE PLAINS or BEAR MEN & BIRD WOMEN both by Thomas Mann
Both books also deal with Native American culture which shows them to be people just like all others . . . albeit with a different view of life. Highly Recommended!

I have a Howard Terpning that I professionally framed. It hangs in my living room. It is a signed poster called The Long Shot. Yeah, it's only a poster, but it looks great. Damn, I can't affort the "real thing." I will take a photo for Diane to post here soon.
