With a number of you listing your vast Custer/LBH book collections. it made me think on which books are the most important books on the subject. That is, which books detail the most amount of important information and rank the highest in the world of research. [ In my opinion only] I tried to list my top 5, but that proved to be to hard. I then listed 10, but that was to easy, so I settled on 7....a very good number and very appropriate for the subject matter. Here is my list, with explanations, would love to hear yours.
1. The Reno Court of Inquiry; Hands down the single most important document of the subject. Actual eyewitness testimonies from officers, scouts, packers and some enlisted men in a court of law. While some people think these accounts are 'tainted' it is still the most valuable piece of information we have on the battle.
2. Camp's Notes; [ any of the compilations] Another important book filled with eyewitness accounts, but unlike the RCOI, here we have privates, scouts and indian giving there accounts. Unfortunately, no one has yet to compile all of his notes into a definitive work.
3. The Custer Myth by Col. W.A. Graham; A masterful account of the battle which for appeared in 1953 and is still an important book today.
4. Men With Custer by Ken Hammer; a great book for research listing all members of the 7th with bios.
5. Lakota Noon by Greg Michno; A great book filled with both soldier and warrior accounts which Michno attempts to put into some kind of structured time frame, which in my opinion, suceeds quite well. Certaintly not for new beginners to the subject.
6.Son of the Morning Star by Evan Connell; Love it or hate it this was probably the biggest selling book on the subject. A fascinationg read and invaluable information.
7. G.A. Custer: His Life & Times by Glen Swanson; A visually stunning book full of photos [ many I had never seen] of participants, guns, letters, flags, dug relics, all in living color. An invaluable book to me in research.
OK, there's my seven with explanations. Everyone probably has their own list....remember, only 7!
