Heard about this book the other day; I think it's more modern, perhaps with Custer overtones. Written by CNN contributor, Walt Rodgers:
"Sleeping With Custer And The Seventh Cavalry: An Embedded Reporter In Iraq," by Walter C. Rodgers.
When Walt travelled with the Seventh in the initial phase of Operation Iraqi Freedom, he'd yack about the glorious history of Custer's regiment. Fortunately, he stopped short of actually singing "Garryowen!"

I seem to recall hearing a news item in 2002 which said that the 7th did in about 400 Iraqis who had the ill judgement (or something) to attack armored vehicles with small arms...on Myles Keogh's birthday.

That's amazing! Does the 7th still celebrate the date? Or was it just an astute journalist who spotted the coincidence? Either way, great story ...

I seem to remember Gen. Schwartzkopf stating at the beginning of Gulf War I that he wasn't going to pull a Custer by attacking without knowing what to expect.

This is a fascinating book, although it leans a bit left (meaning a journalist allows his personal political beliefs influence his reporting). However, it offers one a chance to see today’s 7th Cavalry in action and their strong ties all the way back to Custer. If you’re interested in today’s 7th Cavalry, I recommend Hal Moore (a member of the Friends of the Little Bighorn) and Galloway’s book, “We Were Soldiers Once, and Young” about the 7th in the first major battle of the Vietnam War. And, you should read Robert Utley’s address to the 7th just before they shipped out to Iraq on the Friends of LBH website – www.friendslittlebighorn.com/Robert_utley.htm

The journalist didn't say anything about it--I just happen to know the date and noted it myself. I also seem to remember hearing that they do start each day by playing "Garry Owen" over the loudspeakers.

A great book. And a few mentions of Custer, including one about his losing due to not having the fire support the 7th had at Ia Drang. The movie was good as well, though the Sergeant Major's comment about Custer being a girl thingy was a bit inaccurate. Funny, yes, but hardly true.

OK, Crab, what "thingy" word were you trying to use? I'll take it off the banned list.
