"Spotted Tail and Sergeant Smith of Company B, 9th U.S. Infantry, with imprint of W. A. Croley, Fort Niobrara, Nebraska and signed in ink on verso, Spotted Tail Sergt. Smith Co. B 9th Inf. and Sept. 1881." www.liveauctioneers.com/item/4578559Young Man Afraid of His Horses by Justus Fey, a German photographer, who was working in Deadwood in the late 70s-181 before leaving for Fort Benton: Godkin's photo of Young Man Afraid, for comparison - I'm guessing this was taken in the late 70s.

These are terrific. And wonderful to see the Grand Duke Alexis stuff.
While we're on the subject of less well known photos, would you know of a photo taken by Will Soule at Camp Supply in late March -- probably March 29th -- 1869? I know he took a number there at that time, but have not seen this one. It would be a posed shot of an Indian woman, most likely Cheyenne (or just possibly Kiowa), with a white man. The white man might be identifiable in the photo as an army officer, though given the place and the season it's as likely that he might be dressed more like a scout, e.g. buckskins and furs.
It doesn't appear in the Belous/Weinstein book of Soule's photos, nor have I been able to find it online. But if it does ring a bell with anyone, it'd be great to know -- as the white man in question would be Keogh, and the woman just might be someone exciting such as Monaseetah or Mahwissa. (Custer was passing through Camp Supply with his captives at that time.) The only clue to its existence is in a letter written by Keogh at Camp Supply on that date, in which he says "I sit for my picture with an Indian squaw". It may be that the photo has been lost. But it could be that it's simply lurking somewhere unidentified or miscaptioned -- e.g. as "Squaw With Scout" or similar, if he was in casual frontier dress for it.
