Ladonna, although Kingsley did most of the work, I feel honored to contribute my little part to your question. You don´t know what it means to a german guy like me, who is for so long deeply interested in Native American history and culture, to get the chance to give a little bit back to those who inspired me all these years. I hope I said that in a right way, it´s not so easy to find exactly the right words in a foreign language... Hope I can help you again soon Best wishes from Germany Dietmar Schulte-Möhring

This photograph is from the "Gallery of the Open Frontier" in Lincoln, Nebraska. It shows some Standing Rock leaders, among them Thunder Hawk, but also Arikara and Hidatsa chiefs. I think the photo must be from around 1888, probably by Bell. front row, left to right: Lean Wolf (Hidatsa), Rushing Bear (Arikara), John Grass (Blackfoot), Two Bears (the younger, Yanktonai), Big Head (Yanktonai) back row, far right: Thunder Hawk (Hunkpapa) I am not sure about the other delegates. Welcome, Wolfgang! We love Germans here. Your English is fine. I have had Dietmar translate American English for me -- remember that one, Dietmar? -- so please do not apologize for language difficulties. You and Dietmar can write here in German if you like.

Although this is one of the many unidentified photographs by David F. Barry, I strongly believe that it shows Thunder Hawk, the Hunkpapa:

Hey Dietmar, thanks for the identification of this unknown photo. Yes I agree with you that is Thunder Hawk, great. How can I send to you the Standing Rock chiefs? Look for my e-mail. Yes, Mitterteich in Bayern, nahe der Tschechischen Grenze

Good eye. I think you are right in identifying this photograph as Thunder Hawk.
The photographer however was not Barry. Note the painted backdrop. This was used by Goff in 1881 -- this may have been taken in Aug. 1881 at Standing Rock at the same time as the first portrait of Sitting Bull.

Hello everybody, here is another photo from the Denver Puplic Library, taken by Goff in the fall of 1881. I would say this is Bear´s Rib the Hunkpapa chief. Compare the faces with the picture below.

1872-1888
And therein lies the sorry state of transition from free roaming proud man to a make-believe White person looking like a lost soul!

Absolutely right... Bear Ribs II.
Great comparison.

Isn't the delegation photo above from 1880? Look how young Grass appears to be. I have a Spotted Tail delegation photo (posted below) that looks like it's from the same series - and after all, he was killed in 1881. I wonder if the Goff photo is earlier or did Thunder Hawk, like Grass, grow out his hair later?

There's a photo of the actual 1888 delegation on p 68 of the Donvin Sprague book about Standing Rock with Thunder Hawk, Grass, a rather portly Gall, Bear's Rib and others. My scanner's shot or I would've scanned it and posted it. Perhaps somene else could.
