Can anyone identify the men with George Sword in this photo? The notation at the bottom of the photo, obscured in this version, states that thet were 'Buffalo Bill's Indians' and that it was taken at Pine Ridge - unless it meant they came from Pine Ridge. While I'm at it, what about this man? Judging from the primitive backdrop, it's an early photo.

I think the man sitting on the left is Painted Horse. I have seen several other photographs of him. I also believe I remember he was acting for Cody, so the men around Sword could very well be "Buffalo Bill indians". But i can´t identify any other individual.

Thanks, Dietmar. Here's another one. As you can see, this is from the Glenbow Museum site (or you will be able to see once I send it to Diane) and it's meant to be Spotted Tail. Now, I don't think so... It looks like a Bell photo with some retouching. Here's a photo of White Bull. Is it "the killer of Custer" and the artist or is it someone else? I know it's hard to tell, but from the clothing and the backdrop, this looks like it's from the 1870s or earlier and, while admittedly it's an unsafe generalistion, the clothing would suggest an early date too.

Big Mane and Dead Hand were headman or tiyospaye leader of the Lower Brule, who had their own reservation at the Missouri river near Crow Creek reservation.

Concerning the photograph of White Bull, this is a Sans Arcs chief and not the Miniconjou nephew of Sitting Bull. Stanley J. Morrow photographed him and his family sometime in the 1870s. In the Morrow collection of the W.H. Over Museum are two views of White Bull wearing the same shirt ( I just discovered this is in the NMAI collection and on display now at the Eilteljorg Museum, misidentified as "Mandan") and leggings, but holding a pipe and tobacco bag instead of an eagle tail fan. He also has feather war honor hair ornaments that are lacking in the DPL photo. Hard to see, but he may also have the quirt hanging from his wrist in all the photos. -Bob

Thanks again. I've seen this picture representing the Miniconjou a number of times, but, to me anyhow, he looked too old to be that particular man in what appears to be an early photograph.
Which brings me to my next question: What is the earliest photo of the Miniconjou White Bull? Even the one in Vestal's book which claims it portrays him as a young man shows someone considerably older - over 50 maybe! It seems odd that it's juxtaposed with a photo of One Bull which clearly does show a young man.

If this is meant to be our man, look at his neck. White Bull was born in 1849. Surely this man's too old - unless the date's wrong.

Grahame,
the photo of White Bull in Vestal´s “Warpath” is only a part of a group photograph. The complete picture is in Donovin Sprague´s “Cheyenne River Sioux”. It was taken in Pierre, South Dakota, in 1908 and shows members of a Cheyenne River Indian Council. So actually Vestal´s photo cannot show White Bull as a “young warrior”.
Unfortunately I have no earlier photo of White Bull.

Great photos of an impressive looking character, Bob.
I wonder if the man Shatonska posted isn't the Sans Arc too.

Great photos of an impressive looking character, Bob. I wonder if the man Shatonska posted isn't the Sans Arc too. doesn't seem the same man anyway i have seen in a book the photo of a younger White Bull , don't remember where , but i remember the photo because the face was particular , a bit like Kickin' Bear but less attractive
