I love this story -- perhaps because my husband was in the 173rd Airborne during Vietnam -- but I cannot find High Bald Eagle in the website Indian records. Any ideas? The two soldiers say they believe they are doing their duty, serving their country and honoring their Lakota heritage.
A great-great-grandfather, High Bald Eagle, fought at Little Big Horn against the U.S. 7th Cavalry. Whitebirds have pretty much been soldiers in every armed conflict since then, on the side of the United States since World War I. The roster includes the brothers' dad, Francis, a combat medic in the infantry in Vietnam. Full story (worth the read!): tinyurl.com/u7vlf

Diane- I haven't found any other information on High Bald Eagle's participation in the LBH battle, but I did find a photo of him taken by Father Beuchel in 1922 when he was 74 years old. Certainly was alive in 1876. A number of artifacts he made are in the Beuchel Museum. www.sfmission.org/museum/exhibits/bowsandarrows/signatures.html-Bob
