Does anyone know if the noted historian and Episcopal priest Peter J. Powell is still living? He has written extensively of the northern Cheyenne. Thanks!

8-)As far as I know he is still living. Wish they would re-print some of his books.

Father Powell is associated with the St. Augustine's Center for American Indians, at 4512 North Sheridan Road, Chicago, Illinois 60640, tel. 773-784-1050. I saw a news story three or four years ago which stated he was still based there.

Hello All:
I have been a long time lurker, but this is my first posting to the lbha boards.
Yes, Fr. Powell is still with us, and still producing. Last summer I was a reader for his manuscript, " In Sun's likeness and Power: Cheyenne Accounts of Shield and Tipi Heraldry as narrated to James Mooney, Ethnologist, 1902-1906" for the University of Nebraska Press. Like his other tomes, it is massive, something over 1500 pages in double spaced typscript, with illustrations.

Lurk no longer, Doc - and a big thank you for the information. The combination of Fr. Powell and James Mooney would appear to be akin to a dream come true. Now, if I could only afford to actually own one of his books..........

Thomas,
let me say welcome and thank you for the good news about Father Powell. I´m definetly looking forward to get that book...
I can´t resist to say that your Comanche Political History book is brilliant. Please keep an eye on this board, we will have more space to discuss Comanche history soon.
Very best wishes

The links are broken, they point back to this thread.
I would be especially interested in the new books (maybe they will be affordable for a change in this age of print-on-demand and digital books)

It seems quincanon, along with his ancient computer is as dead as a can of corn beef. Being an infantryman, quincanon is immortal, along with handsome, Adonis like in stature, and has a new computer that brings him finally into the 21st century, but not able for some reason to assume his old persona. So calling upon the place of my birth, quincanon has risen from the ashes of computer failure, flooring installation, and a collapsed dining room ceiling (which is still an ongoing FUBAR) under a new name (this is so DC won't be confused in his dotage) and girds his loins once again for battle as Fairfax. Carry Me Back To Old Virginny.

Tom I will look up Father Powell in the Episcopal Clergy Directory this Sunday and report back to you what I find. Often they have biographical sketches.
