ARTICLE ON CRAZY HORSE WINS NATIONAL HONORS
The Montana Historical Society's "Montana The Magazine of Western History" received the Outstanding Magazine Article Award from the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City Saturday night in ceremonies emceed by retired Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.
"This is an extremely prestigious award," Society Publications Director Molly Holz said. "It is a tribute to the people of Montana and their support of the Society and the magazine."
The winning article was "Tragedy at Red Cloud Agency - The Surrender, Confinement, and Death of Crazy Horse" by Jeffrey Pearson, who is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of New Mexico.
The article examines the last days of the famous Sioux leader, who played a major role at the Battle of the Little Big Horn, and his surrender to U.S. forces on May 6, 1877.
"Through historical photos and thorough research, Pearson analyzes the last stage of Crazy Horse's life and the controversy surrounding the notion that his death was the result of a conspiracy fomented by the agency leadership," the award states.
The award was accepted by Society Photo Editor Glenda Clay Bradshaw, and Business Manager Tammy Ryan. "Our magazine has subscribers in all 50 states and more than 10 foreign countries," Holz said. "Our staff does a great job of getting people interested in Montana and the history of the West and in showing our pride in Montana heritage."
The article is in the summer 2005 issue of the magazine, which is an automatic benefit of membership in the Montana Historical Society. For more information on membership call the Society toll-free at 1-800-243-9900.
