Arthur Short Bull recently received a fellowship which will help him continue his series of paintings of the victims of Wounded Knee. The fellowship will help Short Bull continue his series of paintings depicting the members of the Standing Rock and Cheyenne River reservations who are buried in the mass grave at Wounded Knee. So far, he has created 75 pieces of art representing each man, woman and child buried there. When completed, the series will have 300 paintings with poetry. At its core are 17 works representing children younger than 10, who died on the fields of Wounded Knee.
Visiting the site at Wounded Knee, Short Bull said he became aware that each of these people had a name, had dreams and desires. When he finishes the series, Short Bull hopes to share his work with the people at Cheyenne River and Pine Ridge reservations.
