The man identified as Louie Sitting Bull in the first couple of photographs from the Denver Public Library site appears to be wearing a ceremonial headdress that resembles a published description I have seen of the head gear worn by the (Midnight?) Strong Heart Society of the Hunkpapa Lakota. These ornate ceremonial items featured shaved buffalo bull horns, a head cap adorned with ermine, and a long trail of eagle feathers that sometimes reached to the ground. There is a popular photograph of Sitting Bull in which he wears what appears to be the same or very similar head piece, although it may have been taken at the same studio at about the same time. There is always the possibility that it was merely a prop the photographer employed in order to enhance the appearance of his subjects.

Louis Sitting Bull is listed in the 1897 census record at Standing Rock. As Ladonna said, he was born in 1855. His Indian name is written as "Wamahe".

To Diane Merkel: it's been 3 or 4 years, but those Barry photos alleged to be Louie Sitting Bull and SB's daughter were: JOHN Sitting Bull (pictured with David Barry) and the girl was the wife of Louie Sitting Bull, not one of his daughters. You've probably rectified the situation by now, but better late than never. Incidentally, my info came directly from the prints, which are in Superior, WI (Douglas County Historical Society).
