i am looking for more informations on the person of shell boy.according to w.garnett on sept.4 1877 crazy horse had fled to spotted tail agency with his wife,kicking bear and shell boy.he is also mentioned by utley,organizing
one of the first sun dance on wounded knee creek together with big road and good thunder.
to which band he belonged?was he known by any other name?birth?death?

Shell Boy (Pankeska Hoksila) was born about 1836 (the 1900 census says Jan. 1937) and belonged to the Oyuhpe band of the Oglala (Big Road's band).

Shell Boy probably surrendered with Crazy Horse at the Red Cloud Agency in May 1877 and fled to Canada with the other northern bands in late 1877 or early 1878. He surrendered with the Oglala at Fort Keogh in 1880 and was transferred to the Standing Rock Agency in June 1881. He is recorded in the census that September. In the Big Road Roster (1881), his name is mis-recorded as "Shield Boy". He was transferred with the other Oglala to the Pine Ridge Agency in May 1882.

Shell Boy married about 1857 to Horse Stands (also known as Horse Stops or Woman Singer). They had six children, all but one of which had died by 1900. Their son, Right in the Camp (later known as Joshua Shell Boy) was born in 1866 and had a family on the Pine Ridge Reservation in 1900.

Shell is listed in Big Road's band in three different sources: Big Road roster, the 1881 Standing Rock Agency census and in the 1890 Pine Ridge Agency census (the Rosetta Stone for understanding Oglala bands).

Incidentally, this Shell Boy should not be confused with another northern Indian by the same name. This other Shell Boy (born c1841) was a Brule and was transferred from the Standing Rock Agency to the Rosebud Agency with Bull Dog's band in May 1882.

Hello!

And from the Big Road Roster it seems that Shell Boy was among the 4 akicitas in Big Road's camp with Bear-Looking-Behind, Dog Eagle and Red-Horn-Bull.

I read somewhere that John Colhoff recorded in 1949 that in the White Clay District the leader of Siksicela band was Red Horned Bull. Perhaps he is same with the akicita Red-Horn-Bull?
