Anyone seen the Illingworth photo of the Lakota village from the 1874 Black Hills expedition, or does it no longer exist? It's not in Prelude to Glory, so I suspect it's been damaged beyond repair at some point.

Grahame:
I assume you are referring to image number 812, listed on the reverse of Illingworth's stereo series as "Sioux Camp in Castle Creek Valley." The title is actually somewhat misleading since the view is actually of Custer's camp. This image is published on page 180 of Ernest Grafe and Paul Horsted, Explring with Custer: The 1874 Black Hills Expedition. This book is an excellent review of the expedition and particularly its photographs, largely replacing the earlier work by Krause and Olson, Custer's Prelude to Glory.

Thanks. Kind of disappointing really that he didn't take any images of the Lakotas.
