Pascal,
Interesting question....what do you mean by there ''behavior?" I think their conduct was appropriate, but I imagine you are speaking of them abandoning the field. I think once they and the Ree scouts saw the actual size of the village they began having second thoughts about the success of the operation and given the choice to stay or leave they made the right decision....I would have left with them!
Are you speaking of some particular incident? I think the book...''The Arikara Narrative Of Custer's Campaign'' gives a great insight into what a number of the scouts expierenced...which is , I believe, totally confusion once the battle began...which is the story of the LBH. It is interesting to note that a number of the Indian scouts went directly home...and were never properly discharged therefore, a number were listed as Missing in Action, although they lived well into the twentieth century....some of their widows applied for government compensation for their services, and received some payment.
Anyway, I'm getting off track here. Varnum states in Graham's book that he and six Crows, Five Rees and two scouts rode all night to find the Sioux village...which I think was their basic purpose.
