I'm trying to find any records or lists of the Lakota chiefs, band leaders, heads of families, etc. who were sent to Ft. Randall with Sitting Bull as prisoners of war after their surrender to the US military in 1881. I understand that these people were kept there until 1883 when they were finally returned to their proper agencies. Does anyone know if there is an historical plaque or marker at the site of Ft. Randall?

Funny you should ask that question! I am just about to submit to Diane an article for an upcoming issue of LBH Associates newsletter on this exact document.
"List of Indians (Sitting Bull Party) Turned over to Fort Randall (D.T.) Sept 11, 1881" Submitted by Captain Henry B. Howe. In Fort Randall Letters Received. A second copy of this document with a couple of addition notations exists in the Fort Yates letters Received, stamped received 1883 when Sitting Bull was returned (microfilmed as part of the McLaughline papers).
The document is 8 pages long, listing 31 families or 172 people.
If you can wait a little while, you can have the whole list, together with the names matched up against later census records from the Standing Rock Agency.
