One of our website visitors has asked us to help her identify a photograph of an Indian who is wearing an 1871 Grant Peace Medal. The photo can be viewed at photoswest.org/cgi-bin/imager?10031323+X-31323. She believes it may be Chief Running Sky. If so, she is related to him and would like to verify his identity for her family. She has found two other photos that were apparently taken in the same studio. All three of the Indians are wearing the same headdress and are identified as Lakota. The photos, along with one positively identified as Red Cloud, were donated to the Denver Public Library by Louise Stegner. Does anyone know who she was or her connection to the photographer or Indians? Any information will be greatly appreciated. -- Diane#nosmileys

Louisa Stegner taught in the Omaha Public Schools for 29 years and then operated a bookstore in Omaha, Nebraska. She collected and sold Americana and did some writing of her own. The Denver Public Library became the receipient of many of her photographs, including a large number of the original glass plate negatives of the Wounded Knee photographs.
I have no information in my files regarding Running Sky. Do we know what tribe?
