I found this today and thought it might be useful to someone. James Meade re-enlisted on June 20, 1869 in Co. I, 5th Artillery. He deserted on June 3, 1870. On January 30, 1873, he enlisted in the 7th Cav. under the name of William Wallace and was assigned to Co. L. He surrendered as a deserter pursuant to G.O. 102 A.G.O. 1873 and remained with the 7th Cav. He froze to death at Wood Lake, Dakota Territory on November 27, 1875. I believe Wood Lake is somewhere near Ft. Totten.

Thanks, Billy. This is possibly the brother of my great-great grandfather. I found his "Final Statements" on Fold3. They state he was born in Cork, Ireland, and that his residence before enlistment was New Orleans (even though he enlisted in Massachusetts!). My gg-grandfather Thomas Meade was born ~1839 in Ireland (his obit says Milltown / family says Cork). He emigrated through New Orleans as a boy, lived and worked there, and later moved to the town of Virgnia, a small town in Cass County, Illinois. He had a brother names James with whom he had lost contact. I love that his "William Wallace" (Braveheart) was a two-time deserter! I know that desertion was widespread in this era though. Sad end to his life too.
