Rod Hoffner, an LBHA member, wrote to me about the following that will be mentioned in the June LBHA Newsletter. Popular singer Aimee Mann on her album Lost in Space has a song called "Today's the Day." Part of the lyrics go:
And isn't it enough? Like Major Reno at the bluff Wondering aloud if help is on the way
I sent an email to the songwriter and asked why he chose a somewhat obscure historical reference. He said he needed a word to rhyme with "enough" and "bluff" came to mind and also with that--the poor major. [/color] Several years ago, a producer contacted me, wanting to know where she could find a relief map of the battlefield for a DreamWorks production. I've since wondered what Spielberg was going to do with it. Now I think I know. Rod Hoffner just wrote to me, asking if I had seen the ads for "Into the West" on TNT, a Dreamworks production. Here's the website for the series: alt.tnt.tv/itw/. Looking at the episode blurbs, it appears that Episode 4 may have some resemblance to the Washita (complete with the Dances with Wolves story line of the white girl joining the tribe), Episode 5 is about Little Big Horn, and Episode 6 is about Wounded Knee. Based upon the resources they list in the Educators section, it does not appear that the series will be balanced. Thanks to Rod for letting us know about the song and the series!

This is interesting news.
Looks as if the Custer element may be pretty sketchy, as the cast list features only Custer himself: no Benteen, no Reno, no anyone. We do get Chivington and Fetterman, though, so presumably plenty of focus on Sand Creek. And what looks like some really classy casting for the leading Indians. As Diane says, we can guess the tenor of the series!
