I am trying to figure out if my great great grandfather was in the 7th Cavalry. Family stories tell he may have been too young to join but faked his age and possibly even deserted before the Battle at Little Big Horn.
His name was Charles W. Pierce. Anyone have any ideas where I can search for this information? Thanks!

The name Pierce doesn't show up on the muster rolls for June 25, 1876. freepages.folklore.rootsweb.com/~pickensarchive/custer.htmlBut as stated on the website, no two muster roles were ever identical. Also, many men enlisted under false names. If your great-great-grandfather lied about his age, he may have used a different name too.

He isn't showing up as one who used an alias while at LBH either.
jamnred, as you can imagine, there have been many men through the years with that name. If you can provide some basic genealogical information, perhaps we can help you find him. Of course, family lore is probably the least reliable source of information. Have any photos or documents been passed down through the family?
